What Are The Actual Symptoms Of A Panic Attack
Hopefully you’ll never experience a panic attack because there’s very little, if any, warning that one is on the way. They pop up when you least expect them or want them although if you watch carefully you probably will notice some patterns emerging in how your anxiety attacks emerge. Then again if you’d never experienced an attack you probably wouldn’t be checking up on the symptoms of this particular condition right?
The reason why human beings have survived so long and how we managed to evolve to the sentient, allegedly intelligent, species that we are right now is because of our ability to adapt to our surroundings. Long before we had speech humans had to rely on emotional reactions to our environment to save us from being eaten.
For example when early man first encountered a sabertooth tiger he had two choices:
1. Stay and fight/observe
2. Run away and hide
And until man learned to hunt in groups the smart option was to run away and hide. Well you could also stay and be eaten but that’s not the best way for a species to evolve – the saber tooth tiger would win after all.
Our ability to recognize danger wasn’t based on our logical centres of our brain kicking in – these hadn’t properly developed yet. What kept us alive for millions of years was an emotional response to danger whereby our pituitary gland floods our body with adrenaline so we can either fight for our lives or run away as fast as possible.
The same reaction that we experience during a “fight or flight” response is what happens during an anxiety attack. Your logical centre shuts down and your emotional centre takes over. Rational thought goes out the window and you’re working purely on instinct – so our more animal behaviours appear.
These are the symptoms of an average anxiety attack:
Racing heart beat
Trembling in the hands, legs, arms and feet
Sweating – sometimes profuse
Blurred vision
Shortness of breath
Tightness in chest
Dizziness or vertigo
These are the physical symptoms of a panic attack but usually the first warning sign that something is wrong is that your mind slips into panic attack mode. Once this thought process gets underway it’s enough to actually cause the attack in the first place without any external causes. And once the anxiety settles into your mental state it’s only a matter of time before the physical symptoms manifest themselves.
These can be so severe that it causes you to become rooted to where you’re standing or frozen where you’re sitting. When people feel their first anxiety attack they assume it’s at the very least a mild heart attack just because all of the symptoms of this condition are extremely unpleasant and even mimic a heart attack in certain ways.
After putting up with the discomfort and embarrassment of my anxiety disorder for several years I finally found something that worked and I’d like to share this with you.
